You can’t help but love the consistency in Brinson Renda. Every piece of art she does feels a bit deconstructed. It feels a little as if she’s taken apart her subject matter to understand its essence, and what she’s given you to look at is the best of what she’s found. It doesn’t stop a lot of her images from being disturbing. Although she’s just returned to South Florida after getting her BFA, she’s hit the ground running. She seems to know that complacent art won’t stir your soul.
Take “Idealized Is Not Realized”. This installation originally created in 2007 explores the struggle of self-identity compared to the repeated ideals presented by the mainstream media. The work that inspired it, “Wiggs”, combines video and still shots to frame stereotypes as masks that you can try on. She further breaks apart the media’s influence in her site-specific installation “There is No Separating Yourself From the Media.”
Brinson is unafraid of a challenge. In what she calls a “new age digital salon,” she curated 20 artists recently during the madness that is Art Basel. Despite the chaotic environment that normally sends other Miami artists off the deep end, she managed to even present patrons of the show with a “YouTune,” a custom-designed song for only 99 cents. Her psychedelic mash-up of art and new media is a welcome addition to the South Florida art scene.
