Default Indie Flix - Florida Film - Dan Perez - Voir Dire

Voir Dire By Nerissa Street © 2010
While watching Dan Perez’s films, you’re struck by the raw honesty and straight-forward storytelling. He’s a no-holds-barred kind of filmmaker, because he trusts himself to be in your face with the uncut story. He has a unique way of seeing things. Originally a wedding and corporate videographer, Perez found himself drawn outside of the standard visuals for his work. You’ll see it when you watch his films.
His aesthetic is grounded in the community—and his love for the people of South Florida shines through his work. That’s good, because Perez finds himself telling their stories a lot. His wife waited nine years for a kidney transplant, and spent those years on dialysis. After her successful transplants, Dan produced a video for their 2009 Miami Kidney walk. This wasn’t his first work with a community organization, however. Miami Children’s Hospital asked him to document the unique story of one of their patients, whose brother became a child prodigy pianist.
Now, Dan has turned his eye to one of the most dynamic genres of art in South Florida: Hip Hop. His most recent film “P.A.T.H.: Miami Hip Hop” explores a four-week course in the skills that distinguish Hip Hop from other cultural arts. Following its world premiere at the Chicago International Hip Hop Film Festival, it returned home to an enthusiastic welcome. As arts advocate and attorney Marlon Hill said, “P.A.T.H. film is a must see.”
See the film on Saturday, February 23 at the Auteur Explosion in Fort Lauderdale’s Cinema Paradiso, or contact Dan at DanPerezFilms.com.

More on P.A.T.H -
"P.A.T.H." (which stands for Preserving, Archiving and Teaching Hip-Hop History) is the new film by award-winning documentary filmmaker Dan Perez. It documents the P.A.T.H. Hip-Hop Academy, the first ever summer camp of it's kind in Miami-Dade County.
P.A.T.H. is the brainchild of popular Miami hip-hop artist Brimstone127 who after eight years, finally found a home for his program at the Miami Light Project's downtown Miami studio.
During the four week camp, teenagers from ages 12-18 studied Hip-Hop history, the art of deejaying, emceeing (rapping), B-boying and B-girling (break-dancing), and urban art.
Several of Miami's most talented artists and performers served as instructors. The list included urban artist Krave, DJ Immortal from Scratch Academy, International B-Girl Beta Rawkz and Soulflower who has shared the mic with emcees such as Erykah Badu, KRS-ONE and Outkast.
The camp also featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers. Hip-Hop pioneer Grandmaster Dee of Whodini, DJ Epps, Spider Loc of G-Unit, DJ Magic, popular Miami artist Lebo, Faisal Tavernier of Urban America Network and international motivational speaker Kirk Nugent were just some of the names that took the time to stop in and address the students.
