FemmeFest: A night of beautiful women coming together to celebrate music and art. And where there are women, there will be men. This was my master plan when Dj Oski first asked me to come up with my dream show in december of 2007. You see, for over 10 years I was an anonymous local music advocate who hosted a website to help promote the south florida local music scene. After a chance online discussion with dj oski, who hosts a local music showcase on thursdays at tobacco road, led to me coming out from behind my computer screen and finally revealing my identity, I wasn't going to do your typical local show. it was gunna be BIG. and it was. apart from Lillith Fair, FemmeFest was to be MOTHER of all local music festivals.
My first show featured 30 live acts on 4 stages, all of which featured at least one female member. plus the legendary Tobacco Road's parking lot was turned into an arts and crafts bazaar, where a female led drum circle ensued to complete the night. We raffled items that were donated by local businesses and gave the proceeds to R.A.I.N.N. (
www.rainn.org). We made compilation CD's featuring all the bands who performed as well as Tshirts & posters.
The following year was just as big and just as beautiful. We also incorporated burlesque dancers, comedians and even a magician!
And just recently in it's 3rd annual installment, we did it even BIGGER! 2 days, at 2 venues in 2 counties on 6 stages!
Day 1 on November 6th 2009 @ Tobacco Road in Miami.
And day 2 on November 7th 2009 @ Murphy's in Boca Raton.
Only fitting that the flyer would depict a strong and sexy woman as the "mascot". Who better than Wonder Woman! Singer Chloe Dolandis even dressed the part for her show! We also wanted to pay tribute to other strong female role models and made tshirts and posters with those such as Rosa Parks and the artist Freeda. We raffled Items donated by our vendors and raised money for Breast Cancer Research.
While organizing an event of this magnitude is no easy feat, Oski & I seem to have it down to a science. We offer as many different styles of music as possible, to ensure that there is something for everyone. This is about more than just putting on a show. more than just a bunch of hot chicks. It's about bringing people together through music and art and hopefully sustaining some type of comraderie in the scene. It's about appreciating all of what south florida has to offer in music and art. it's beautiful. it's FemmeFest.
Both nights radiated with positive energy. While the girls rocked out, the guys marveled with their jaws dragging on the floor. I've really gotta hand it to Crimson Juliet for rocking out all night long on day 2 (after also performing on day 1)! And on that note, in all honesty, All the bands on both nights were top notch. I couldn't have hoped for a better line up:
The Bailouts, C of W, BitchFire, Aria Kamikaze, Telekinetic Walrus and the Pride of Ions, the Lu White Combo, Crimson Juliet, The Shutter, Maria Marocka, Southern Star, Pretty On Paper, For The Record, Jill Hartmann, Nakedown, Sol, Omine, Joy Ryder, Stefanie Smerkers Band, Daysleeper, Chloe Dolandis, Renee Fiallos' Jazz Ensemble, Pocket Of Lollipops, Jen Mack, Sick Assembled, No Line & Oblivious Signal.
With these powerful and dynamic girls in our local music scene, the world is bound to take notice! Rock and Roll aint just a mans world.
